Waxing FAQs: What to Expect at Your First Wax

Let’s get the big one out of the way first: yes, I’ve seen it.

Whatever you’re worried about — the hair, the skin, the position you’re going to have to get into, whether something looks “normal”.  I promise I have seen it before. Probably this week. And I did not think twice about it after that client walked out the door.

Your first wax can be a nerve-wracking if you have no idea what you’re walking into. So if it’s your first time Googling “waxing Las Vegas” and you’re mentally preparing for a painful or awkward 30 minutes, I’m here to tell you how a wax can and should actually go.

Before Your First Wax

First things first: grow it out.

Ideally, your hair should be about ¼ inch long, or roughly the length of a grain of rice. The wax needs enough hair to actually grab onto. If you shaved three days ago and are hoping we can just make it work, we probably can’t. Hair that’s too-short usually means more passes, more irritation, and less-than-great results. Not exactly the first wax experience I want for you.

For a couple of days before your appointment, keep things simple. Skip exfoliating the area, and make sure you tell me about any retinoids or prescription skincare you’re using. Certain products can make your skin more vulnerable to irritation or lifting during a wax, and that is information I definitely want before we get started.

The day of your appointment, shower like normal and come with clean, dry skin. No lotion, oils, or other products on the area. And please wear something comfortable for afterward. Those skin-tight jeans? Today is not their day.

Okay, But What Actually Happens During a Brazilian?

You’ll come in, and we’ll talk for a minute about what you want done, whether this is your first Brazilian wax, and anything else I need to know.

Then I step out so you can undress from the waist down and get comfortable on the table. When I come back in, I’ll tell you exactly how I need you to position yourself.

Are there positions? Yes.

Will one of them probably involve holding your own leg? Also yes.

Will you feel slightly ridiculous for approximately eleven seconds before realizing I could not possibly care less? Yep.

Once we get started, I clean and prep the skin and work in small sections. The wax goes on, sets, and comes off quickly while I keep the skin taut. We keep moving until everything is gone, then I tweeze any stubborn little strays and apply something soothing to the skin. And that’s it.

My Brazilian wax appointments are usually around 15 minutes. You will spend significantly more time worrying about your first wax than you will actually getting waxed.

How Bad Does a Brazilian Wax Hurt?

I’m not going to lie to you and tell you it feels like a gentle spa treatment. Your first wax is usually the spiciest.

It’s a quick, sharp sting when the wax comes off, but that feeling fades fast. Then we move to the next section. There are definitely a few spots where you may suddenly stop whatever story you were telling me mid-sentence, but it’s over quickly. And the good news? It usually gets much easier when you wax consistently.

Regular waxing means we’re catching hair at different stages of growth, and over time many clients notice their regrowth feels softer or finer. You also know exactly what to expect after that first appointment, which makes the whole thing feel considerably less intimidating. People who were white-knuckling the table during their first appointment are usually telling me about their boyfriend, their job, or what they’re ordering for dinner a few waxes later.

One more tip: if you know you’re extra sensitive around your period, try not to schedule your first wax during those few days. Hormonal changes can make waxing feel a little more intense for some people.

What Happens After Your Wax?

You may leave a little pink or red, and you might notice some tiny bumps around the follicles. That’s a pretty normal response after waxing and usually settles down fairly quickly. For the next 24–48 hours, your only job is to leave her alone.

Skip the gym, hot tubs, pools, saunas, tanning, and sex. Basically, if it involves a lot of heat, sweat, bacteria, or friction, give it a minute. Loose, breathable clothing is your friend.

After about 48 hours, you can start gently exfoliating a few times a week and moisturizing regularly. If you are prone to ingrowns, this part matters. Please do not lovingly follow every aftercare instruction for three days and then forget exfoliation exists until I see you again.

For the best results, plan to come back about every four to six weeks. Staying fairly consistent gives your hair a chance to settle into a waxing routine, and most people find their appointments get much easier over time.

The First-Wax Questions You’re Too Afraid to Ask

Can I get waxed on my period?

Yep. Pop in a fresh tampon or menstrual cup and come on in. This is a completely normal appointment for me. Just keep in mind that you may feel a little more sensitive than usual.

What if my body has a reaction?

It happens. Bodies do weird things. It’s involuntary, it means absolutely nothing, and I promise I am not going home to tell someone about it.

Should I trim before my appointment?

Nope. Put the scissors down.

If anything needs to be trimmed, I can handle it. Trying to eyeball the perfect waxing length at home tends to create more problems than it solves.

What if I’m really hairy?

Congratulations, you qualify for waxing.

What if I don’t look like other people down there?

You don’t. Nobody does. There is no correct amount of hair, skin color, body shape, vulva shape, thigh size, stretch mark situation, or anything else you need to have before you’re “allowed” to book a Brazilian.
